Earthworm Theme

- Room set up:
Plastic worms in critter cage for children to handle
Felt board pictures of worm and body parts.
 Magnetic worm puzzle
Gloves and trays for observing live worms

- Worm bin from Herman the Worm.
  1. Start medium using newspaper and dirt.
  2. Add worms... red worms do the best (purchase at the bait shop).
  3. Add food. Encourage children to bring small amounts from home.
*WARNING: Worms do not eat meat or junk food
  4. Handle worms using gloves to protect the worms from salty hands.

- Vocabulary:
earthworm, habitat, invertabrate, oxygen, slime, soil, compost, recycle

- Books - My favorite:
Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin

- KID PIX (Art Program) for older students to use to "paint worms".
Use the spray paint option to make long worms.

- Carry over to classroom project:
For the very brave, worm painting. Allow worms to wiggle through
mud. Place muddy worms on a piece of paper. Very cool!

** Our worms are released into the terrarium in the classroom.
Nine months later we are still harvesting baby worms from the
dirt used in the worm farm.
